Remote Monitoring of HiPath Systems (Fault Management) 
 

Overview  
Remote monitoring, also called Fault Management, is a service provided by the manufacturer (Siemens Enterprise Communications GmbH & Co. KG) to relieve customers of maintenance tasks. The aim is to locate errors before they become manifest (before the customer notices them). Errors should be registered when the first signs are noticed. The manufacturer's service center identifies when a software module is malfunctioning or a board is defective and detects whether the error is significant.
Remote monitoring also detects when load capacity limitations are close to being reached. It can be configured in HiPath systems using Manager E and on HG 1500 boards via WBM.

Error classes  
Errors are sorted into three classes (A, B and C) as follows:
 •   Class-A errors can be resolved by the customer's own personnel.
 •   Class-B errors must be handled by the manufacturer's service technicians.
 •   Class-C errors are dealt with by the manufacturer's development department.
In the default setting, the service center is only notified of Class-B errors.

SNMP  
Telecommunication systems can be monitored remotely via the Internet using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). SNMP is particularly suited to monitoring and administering network elements, including the HiPath 3000/5000 system itself.
SNMP can be used to:
 •   implement remote maintenance jobs (such as online port status, disabling and enabling ports, and determining free ports).
 •   address HiPath 3000/5000 via the TCP/IP protocol family
 •   visualize the operating status of HiPath 3000/5000 systems
 •   allow external management applications, such as HiPath Fault Management, HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli, to access data in HiPath 3000/5000 (using SNMP messages, such as GET, SET, and TRAP)
 •   transmit service-related errors
Management information databases (MIB) define the volume of data that can be administered via SNMP. They are data models that describe the network elements to be administered in a very specific ways. Error message transmitted via the Internet are called SNMP traps.
